DO I mind no longer being role-play lead?

nope.  There are several reasons for this.

The first one is the person who has taken over from me.  Libbie CARES about the sim.  So I know her heart is in the right place.  But most important;y- she and I have positively and totally differant ideas about a LOT of things.  Chalk and cheese in many ways.

And thats the kicker.  Role-play leads should get differances between them.  As long as somones heart is in the right place, the differances are ALWAYS good.

So i do not miss it.

I like now being part of a team- 13 months of being THE point man- in HR and WoH- 13 months of CREATING the HR and WoH campaign… it sits heavy.

I enjoy the lightness of my current incarnation.

And ebsides- I know what libbie has planned… and its EVILLLLLLLLLLL….

Really.

Seriously.

Evil.

/me is so happy

WOW!

You know- you turn you back and suddenly seven months have passed.

WOW!

OK, will start updating soon…

Transparency

Its great.

People are playing a game.   this is the game- Our Harry Potter SIM is more transparent than yours.

Our SIM is more fair and democratic than yours.

This is the rule-

By your actions shallyou be judged.

Don’t argue it- either side.

DO IT!

Just show folks how YOUR stuff works.  Leave the otherside alone.  OK?  Focus on YOUR side.

I bet some can’t.  I lay money on the table here that some folks will be forced to attack, attack, attack…

The boo-boo in full!

So, I was on line a LOT yesterday.

Discovered plenty of things.

1- Got online to discover that Luthien is VERY and deeply upset.  And not in an acting about way.  But in a deeply really someone has hurt her way.  I was like WTF?

1b- I was brought up to speed by someone in the HR group.  THEY were deeply upset that Luthien had been upset.  What had happened was AWFUL.  They also wanted to prevent someone being blamed for doing something deliberately and wanted to set the record straight and sort something out.  Having talked to both sides like, this is what happened.

1c- Yesterday Darcy R decides to open the Hogwarts Reborn GM Council section  of the Reborn Forum list.  Why is this such a big thing?  It shouldn’t be, however she never sought the permission of the people concerned who wrote on said forum (she never knew it was against federal law bless her).  At someone point however this minor thing event to the attention of Tyiler S.

Anyway Tyiler goes all out and tells folks to deliberately look at the forums in an attempt to try and say someone has broken the ToS (its doesn’t but BLESS he tried).  Very soon afterwards the unspeakable happens.  A section of of the forum which contains personal and private information about Luthien is revealed.  It is revealed in a nasty way.  Someone makes a notecard of it and sends it out and around.  It is being shared by folks.

Did you know that rapists like to take the testimony of their victims and distribute it around other rapists for their jollifications?  Child molesters do the same.  I say this to allow folks know- if you were one of the people who did that- who copied and pasted and distributed personal information around- you are the same kind of person as they are.  No, you are.  I want you to know that.  Its great i can say that and the person who did that is WAY too cowardly to ever even say ‘Hey Danton no I am not’.  Which is great.  Because until they do- then they and everyone who knows them and who reads these words also knows- they have the exact same mind set as a sex offender- its not about the ACT is it?  its about POWER.  You are a weak person.  You need to find power to justify yourself.  This is why you did that.   Sure tyou can bicth about this part of my blog to you but you will NEVER talk to me and demand I apologise because I am right about you.  I see you.  I know you.  You have been judged and found wanting.

At that point one of Luthein’s friends says that the forums will be closed again or Darcy R WILL be in court on the grounds she is breaking federal law and not in a small ‘opps’ way but in a very serious way.  The forums are closed.  The end.

Except its not- because someone really upset Luthien and we had to spend a lot of time looking after this lady with some big tlc.

There are many issues  here to consider:

2- Why was the GM Council lists made public and why were they advertised? I do not know.  I know what some people think- they think it is because several former members of the HR GM Council are now involved in WoH and they wanted to ‘expose’ all the nasty things they said about others while discharging their duties- encouraged to discharge their duties by these self same people.

I do NOT believe that is the case.

I believe  there is a desire to run far more transparently over in the old HR sim.  To allow members see what is happening and have a say in the running of the SIM  I believe that Darcy (who really IS one of the sweetest folks I know in SL) really wanted to be open and honest and she meant NOTHING malicious or nasty when opening the forums.  It was a mistake- I wish I still worked for her- i would have advised her it was a mistake- would have told her it was against the law, and would have pointed out that it is logically defeating.  because once you do that then it would send out to the members of the HR sim a very clear message:

If THAT happened then at that point the policy is clear that it is important for the members of Hogwarts Reborn to have total transparency to all PREVIOUS RULINGS and decisions.  or put another way- the Gm Council existed for just over a month- before that are many months of Me, Harry and Darcy doing kinda what we wanted- I keep extensive logs of those chats- what we said about people in our duties of running the SIM; private conversations and comments about just about everyone IN the sim; private revelations about our lives etc.

I would have advised Darcy that once she opens the door to RETROSPECTIVE REVELATION she cannot then say ‘You can see THIS but not THIS’ as that would appear to the membership to prove her motives were entirely selfish and purely  for partisan motivations.

I would have advised her not to go there as when you start dealing in truth, you face  forces you cannot control.

But if that IS the new policy- please let me know and I will use this blog to release the information contained therein.

Factions.

All good role-playing games have factions.  Sides to choose.  The choice of sides is intregal in the whole of Rowlings work.  Thus we make it seriously apparent here.
EVERYONE picks a faction.  No choice.  Chose wisely.
What was it that Dumbledore said:
“Its our choices which define us Harry”
Indeed it is.
In each area one decides to base your character one is given a choice.  You decide if you want to join a faction.
So, first you say WHERE you character is based.
And then decide if they wnat to join a faction (students always do, only they call them houses).
Why SHOULD you join a faction?
Because role-play is born from conflict.  Drama, tension, action. All born from  conflict.  Conflict does not mean violence.  It can mean anything but violence.
Here we try and place the conflict within a context that is not only manageable but exciting.

Student factions:
The Ravenclaw-
Smartest of all the houses there is a two fold desire within the Ravenclaw- on the one half they are focused towards gaining the most house points and being the smart House.  However this can push beyond that.  Some do not just want toi become the smartest.  But the BEST.
And this has led to divisions within the House.  Several in fact.
One cabal of students they say are determined to take over the House.
They call themselves “The Ravens Claw.”
An intellectual elite, originally formed out of pure blood Ravenclaw, or as someone once said ‘The Ravenclaws Slytherin’.  They see themselves as a House Within a House.  They say the Ravens Claw seeks forbidden information.  They say they answer only to the Head of House.  They say they bully other members.  They say THESE are the future of House Ravenclaw.
They say the Claw keep files on their fellow students and upon the other houses.

“Look, I am not saying this to be mean Professor- but if you ever mark me THIS low again… I will tell the new headmaster about your liason with the wife of a certain shop owner in Hogsmeade!  Yes, YOU can call it blackmail, but I call it you just being FAIR on us from now on.  NO, I don’t want you to cheat for me- I just want you to start marking us fairly.  Do not mess with the Claw professor.  We won’t stand for it”
-Unnamed Claw

Added to this is another Secret Society- The Pudding Club.
This group are the opposite of the Ravens Claw.  They are relaxed.  They are easy going.  They get on with the other houses.  They are simply the smartest kids in school.
Some say the Pudding Club are THE most powerful duellists in the school.
And thus is why The Ravens Claws have not taken over the house.

“Tell you what?  Why don’t YOU push off yeah?”
ZAMP!
“Opps.  Was that your hat?  I am SO sorry.  Bye now.”
-Member of the pudding Club to a rather arraogant member of House Gryffindor.

The Gryffindor:
Gryffindor is a house that is split least of all, but the split is VERY serious.
This was after all, the House that saved the school.  This is the House of Potter and Grainger and the Weasleys.  This is the House that WON!
As such they have remained committed to the principles of that era, and have simply become the most conservative of the houses.  Gryffindor wear PROPER uniform; they like the school routine to REMAIN as it is; the Gryffindor are the guardians of Hogwarts- a new head COULD mean that the old systems will change.  They will not stand for that.  They are Gryffindor, the saviors of the school.
This school stands because Gryffindor blood was spilt to protect it- the most noble of warriors you see.
The Gryffindor are if anything the most conservative of the houses.  They alone do not suffer from internal division within their faction… at least not openly.  Some Gryffindor find the whole ‘old fashiondness’ of the house to be really hard to cope with.  They find it a bit stuffy.
They do not have a name, but the majority of the house have called them the ‘Nickers’.  It comes from the letters NICR- which stand for ‘Not in OUR common room’.
The Nickers they whisper are growing in number.

“That skirt is WAY too small.  Who do you think you are?  A Nicker?”

“Oh bloody hell- I sware I am going to start hanging out with the Hufflepuffs soon.”

The Slytherin
If ever there was a house divided it is the Slytherin.  And its easy to see why.
After the Battle of Hogwarts this house above all faced a serious education in numbers.  It became the most despised house- but for good reason.  The actions of a few, a handful of this house, and above all the actions of Snape himself, allowed the house be redeemed.
And so a myth was born- the Slytherin would never APOLOGISE but anytime anyone mention the Death Eaters and the war one would find them evoking Snapes name; but mostly they became much more quiet.  They continued with their old prejudices and beliefs- typical Slytherin indeed, but much quieter, much less in your face.
And then something happened.  A new type of Slytherin began to appear.
For them the word ‘Elite’ took new meaning- as the purity of the bloodlines is diminished, they saw that they had to renew the house.  No longer could anyone say BREEDING was the judge of a Snake.  No.  Now it was brilliance.  To this new generation of Slytherin, the true meaning of the house was to be THE Elite.  The best.  Smaret than the Ravenclaws, more brave than any Gryffindor…
The division within the house is very similar to the division within the British muggle Conservative party in the 1970’s- on the one hand you had the traditional conservatives- paternalistic, aristocratic and all about breeding.  And on the other- the radical neo-cons of Thatcher’s conservatives.  And that’s how it is in the house.  Traditional Slytherin who are being usurped by the new Elite Slytherin.

“You know what you prat?  I don’t give a damn if he IS a muggle born.  He is smarter than you, he is more ruthless, and he sneers at you because he knows that when HE graduates he will be higher in the ministry than you are.  You want to know what?  He is a million times more Slytherin than you will EVER be.”

This faction of Slythrin, who call themselves ‘The Snake Bites’ pride themselves on being the best of the best- they find the old ways of the Slytherin to be stuffy and harsh; and they find the school to be stuff and harsh.  They are young and radical- they are rebels, but rebels who are always polite- they are ruthless; they are elite.
The old guard have a choice- join with them or… well, the traditional SLytherin, the ones who pride themselves on their breeding have found that they have only one set of allies in the school right now.
House Gryffindor and their natural conservatism.  The Gryffindor/Slytherin alliance is important.

“I know, I know old chap- but ask yourself this- which house is going to help us stand up to the Snake Bites?  So go and ask that damn red wearing strumpet over for tea, alright?”

House Huflepuff
Quiet, dogged, determined Hufflepuffs.  Nothing could ever split them.
Or so they say.
There is a rumour.
A hint of a rumour.
That within this house there exists an order of Hufflepuff.  A secret cabal dedicated to JUSTICE for the weak.  Who have born the scars of the Battle of Hogwarts beyond all others.  Who call themselves ‘The Badgers Bite’ and who exist to train themselves up to become Aurors and agents of the Ministry.

“They kinda make Potter and his lot look a bit… well soft on Dark Wizards if you ask me.  Goes like this- IF you want to an an Auror, join the Hufflepuffs.  They get the short cuts and they get to deal with all the secret stuff.”

Some have hinted however something deeper lies at the heart of the Hufflepuffs.

Adult Factions:
The New Order-
They look like Dark Wizards; they dress like Deark Wizards; they ACT like Dark Wizards.
They are something much much worse.
All adult characters have the option to join this faction at once- this is.. The New Order.
A self serving group of Wizards all motivated towards bringing the Wizarding world to a higher state of development.
They are not motivated by power, by evil or malice… they are motivated by the Muggle Corporate world.
The New Order started life after the last war as an interesting idea.  Was there anything from the Muggle world we could learn.  Some found the ideas of Muggle corporations to be very interesting.
Others however saw in Corporate life a way of dealing with the long standing prejudices of the Wizarding world.
The Ministry of Magic was STILL filled jobs for the boys- it was not WHAT you knew it was WHO you knew.  Many Muggles rebelled against that.
Thus was born the Meritocracy.
Their aim is to reform the whole of the Wizarding world.  They want to run businesses like a corporation.  They want to be organised and motivated.  They want to dominate- they want to get a big say in the future of the ministry.  They see Shaklebolt as their inspiration.

“Look, will you just listen.  I know we do not have any leaders- we are not on about apponing some kind of king or political leader- what we ARE saying however is that a small body- maybe 50 wizards, made up of everyone and anyone- the best of us- and they run things- how can THAT be a bad idea.”

“When will you realise mate that you have it all wrong.  The New Order is about taking us Wizards and witches to the next stage of our history.  I mean, we DO change on occasion you know.”

“New Order- why doesn’t the Aurors purge them I say.  Its obvious they are all You Know Whos ex-followers all trying a new angle.  Round ‘em up I say.”

The ‘Status Quo’
The old way things were done.
Members of the Status Quo are Wizards who come from pure blood families and… well… if asked they say they ‘help’ each other.  In reality they are beyond nepotism.  They will do anything to aid a fellow member of the Status Quo.  Arrogant, big ignorant and proud, the Status Quo are only concerned with lining their pockets and gaining jobs for themselves.

The Cabals.
If Muggle criminals gangs are called Posses and Mobs, then Wizard ones are called Cabals.  These are the Dark Wizards.  And they are engaged in a never ending fight to organise the criminal world of Wizards.
The world of wizards has a thriving black market; it is filled with smuggling; it is filled wit that which is forbidden.  To run this, to control it, a wizard would do much.  There is no overlord.  There are no Dark Lords.  Yet.

The Death Eaters
They were defeated.  They were destroyed.  The Minister has allowed an open bounty be placed on any who call them that- large rewards lie for anyone who alerts the Aurors or, takes one down themselves.  The pitiful remains of Voldermorts once mighty Army hide for fear of exposure and worse… the revelation that someday they could face a lynch mob.

Hogsmeade Based characters
If you base yourself in Hogmeade you have one option you can join at once.
‘Biedermann’s Boys’
Sigmar Beidermann was a wizard of East End origin who ‘retired’ to the town some years ago.
He has been quietly buying up the town ever since.
He is now the main landlord in the area.
And is a very unpleasant man.  He is attempting to take over the town.  He is attempting to make himself undisputed leader of the only Wizarding town in Britain.
Those who work for him are openly saying THEY are his lackeys.
Only a small network of residents based out of the Three Broomsticks oppose his evil plans.
Oddly enough when they complain about Biedermann, many people just giggle at them.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO JOIN A FACTION (unless you are a student).  Its an option for you all.

Secret Societies:
This is how secret societies work.
Want to form one.  Go ahead.
They are not factions.
Quick tip- keep the damn thing secret ok.

In the whispers of conspiracy lie the greatest plots- tell no one (except the RPO in charge of your area)

In all things there must be choice.
ALL players must be given choice- and the results of that choice provide the consequences of your actions.

When designing a new character or adjusting an old character, I need you all to make a choice-
WHERE IC do you wish to be based?  Where will you be based as your primary location within the SIM?

We start small- we start with only those locations we can have- and then we grow.  And expand.

The and Role-play guides:
When you register your character we will be asking WHERE you want you character to be ‘based’- this will be the central Nexus for you character.
The primary location for many of our characters will be Hogwarts School- after all, it is the joy of playing in such a place that draws us.
But away from that there is also a need to run plots for adults.
Added to that there is a greater need- to be able to cater to differing types of players.  Therefore what we have here is a guide to the locations and the kind of plot ‘atmosphere’ one will find there as well as below that a helpful hint to designing characters.
Understand- we MUST grow.  Natural SL life will reduce our numbers.  SO we MUST grow.
But be that as it may- let us also look to the fact that at the moment we are SMALL.
Let us also look that we can only cover what there is an audience for at this moment.
We ask you to specify a location in order to know what folks want and will want.

Godrics Hollow:
A sleepy quiet Wizarding Community; the much larger muggle one is ignored; this place is filled with nice and relaxed Wizards who look our for one another.  Nothing ever really happens here.  Or so they say.
The precise nature of the role-play is to be confirmed, but mostly a place of gentle light IC role-play.  Some social events, but mostly a place where Wizards can meet from private chats.  I will talk to those involved here about maybe if we need an RPO here or it we make this as a location to be used much more in the future.  Certainly there is a LOT of potential for adult based plot.

The Ministry of Magic & Daigon Alley:
Adult characters who want to say they are BASED in the Alley & the Ministry would be playing cosmopolitan characters; but you are urban, and you are use to the life of the alley- THIS will be the focus of your game as much as we can make it- the aim will be to have lots of small plots, utilising locations not rented and NPC’s extensively, to create a vibrant and thriving part of the campaign.
The RPO’s will be expected to help with this area- working with players to really, properly create the first truly working adult plot.

((Knockturn Alley:
In time this will become a totally self sustaining location; characters based here will be trapped in this world- one of violence and the fear of it; and where if they do anything outside the boundaries of accepted behavior the aurors will come for them.  We want to start this one but we want to make sure we have the players and the right atmosphere))

Hosgmeade:
A small, backward, insular campaign- yes characters based here can and will interact everywhere else, but mostly you plot is about YOUR town.  You will have an epic campaign about life, love, death and triumph and disaster AND where the outcome of the winner of the Annual Pie Eating Competition is DAMN important!
The aim is to create a campaign WITHIN a campaign- as we know from the books- Harry spent seven long years in that school, and it was only at the end he began to glimpse the depth of the secrets in Hiogwameade.
We will be looking foir employment for characters- jobs to hold and so forth.
Hosgmeade is a place of deep secrets and to be honest- great subtlety.  Characters here will see the world go by quick, while THEIR plots crawl slowly until both sides meet and they realise you may be the ones they needed from the word go.

The School
The School will have its traditional split between its four houses.  It will be a bit different.  The attempt here will be to create a atmosphere of tension and excitement and adventure.
Just to let you know- the Houses will be much more at war with each other- the Heads of Hosues will be orcastrating this for the good of the plot( so heads up folks- NO ONE REALLY hates each other IC ok? LOL I know YOU know, but some folks back in the past had issues thinking that you had to dislike someone REALLY in order to play!).
But if you read on you will see that there are division WITHIN the houses as well.
Things are NOT black and white- we have many shades.

Character Templates
Role-play style guides:
Experienced role-players never get stuck for ideas.  Or so they say.  The truth of it is this- we all find inspiration everywhere we can.
What follows are templates- ideals and ideas- a few quotes.  They sum up the views of characters in the areas the campaign is set in.  They are suggestions as to the characters we would accept- they show the vast diversity of canon but hopefully more than that- hopefully suggesting ideas and concepts beyond what is written.
We are limited only by the rules of Rowlings universe and our own imaginations.

Characters based in Wizards Alley and the Ministry of Magic:
“Its a funny ole life.  You work hard, keep your nose clean, get on with it all, no problems yeah?  Well, working down Daigon the weird thing is you can’t help but spot others wizards getting up to all sorts.  But I know my place.  I kep my head down and do my job.  As me old mum use to say ‘Never stick your wand where you don’t want it snapped off’”
-Gilbert Colling, Itinerant Wizard

“DO you have an appointment?  You do not?  Well I am going to have to ask you to… Did you say a Hippogriff?  Yes, yes that IS bad.  I suppose I can see you now.  It attacked your son?  Oh dear.  Is he alright?  Oh, good. Good… yes, yes I know, but for some boys having only one ear can be seen as source of pride, yes?  And yes, we CAN get around a team from the magical animals retrival team- next Thursday be good for you?  There is no use shouting at me, we are rushed off our feet around here.”
- Louisa Delbadore, Department of Magical Creatures (admin section)

“What’s it like working in the ministry?  Too few people doing too much work.  For ungrateful gits.  Ungrateful gits with wands.”
- Theodore Von Eikenhaffer- Senior member of the Ministry of Magic

“I love it here.  Every day SOMEONE does SOMETHING stupid.  Everyday.  You can be sure of it.  Without fail.  And then you can do one of three things.  One- ignore it.  Two laugh at it.  Or three add details and tell the Prophet.  What?  Get involved?  Are you insane?”
- Moragn- Wizarding tradesman.

“I look around ai I feel despair.  What we REALLy need here is some order.”
-ABilgail de Winter- member of ‘The New order’

Hogsmeade
“Ohhh, it’s a bonny wee town.  It can get a we bit rowdy at times, but on the whole its lovely.  We like it quiet.  (long pause) That was your first hint to leave young man.  What?  Yes, the loss of all the bones in your leg was the second one.”
- Tabitha- elderly Witch.

“Well, Morag said that Mr. Henderil, you know, he that came here only 20 years ago, the newcomer, well Henderil was seen consorting with some odd folks at the dge of the village- I do not know WHO they were; probably foreign chaps lik from Bulgarian or Gwent, anyways, he was seen consorting, and then Morag said that the very next day Heneril’s broom shot out at about 100 miles an hour- right out of his house all by itself, with Henderil chasing after it and cursing it.  It flew away.  It did.  I KNOW!  That is exactly what Morag said…”
- William Abercrombe- former resident of the town

“Yes, its quiet.  Yes its sleepy.  No, we are NOT stupid.  Tsk!  Silly fool- OK, allow me to PORVE that for you shall I?  Look at that wall.  Third picture from the left.  Yes.  Now look closer.  Ah.  Not so cocky now are we.  SO let me guess you gather never said that he use to love here either I take it?  Hmmmn.  Interesting that.  The secrets we find here.”
- Jacob, resident.

“Young man, you talk like THAT again and I will tell the headmaster.  And I believe he has devised a new punishment for those who upset the town. (leans forward and whispers) And if THAT don’t work sweetheart, then I promise ya that ya will find yaself at the bottom of the lake without a wand understood sunshine!?”
- Sigmar Beidermann, resident landlord.

OK, time for the new start!

The World of Hogwarts- The Setting

The setting
We are set 10 years after the end of the main story.
Nine years before Rowling shows the fate of Harry and Ron and everyone.

SO, where are we?
We are in Hogwarts and the year (by Muggle Reckoning) is 2007.
Kingsley Shacklepot is Minister of Magic- has been since the last war.
He is respected and filled with common sense.
He is great inspiration and in many ways the banner bearer of the ‘new age’ of the Ministry.
It is much more functional.  Less prone to the blind silliness that took place under Voldermort.
Kingsley knows his stuff and is very popular in his position.  He acts quickly and swiftly to deal with any dangers which face Britain.
In many ways its kinda a golden age.  The young and famous Auror Harry Potter, is making a name for himself, and a life.
And the tales and stories of the world continues.

This is the world after the Final War with Voldermort.  The Death Eaters were met at the Battle of Hogwarts and were destroyed.  Obliterated.
The Minister of Magic began an ongoing crusade against ALL members.
Those not killed have been hounded out of the country and/or sent to Azkaban.  The Dementor population decimated in the war, now maintain the Wizards jail again.  The charms that maintain their obedience are harsh indeed.
They will NEVER rebel again

The Ministry STILL reflects Wizarding Society- and the Wizards of Britain are still as they were ten years ago.  They are conservative and private people.
They value ‘minding your own business’.  They value the idea of being ‘left alone’.  MOST Wizards and Witches live away from each other- surrounded by muffles in isolation.  Being allowed to get on with it all.
Being free to live as they damn well please.

It is only in a few places that Wizards gather- in London there is Daigon Alley of course, and the ministry of magic.  There is the small Muggle town of Godrics Hallow, with its long lasting Wizard population; and there is Hosgmeade the only Wizarding town in Britain… and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Here and only here do Wizards gather in large numbers.

And because of this there is no Wizarding government.
If individual freedom is the main bastion of the Wizarding world, thus they have NO government.
The basic infrastructure is provided by the ministry.
Wizarding society is by its nature a lawless place- but as opposed to one of criminality, its one of naughtiness mostly (be it the seemingly respectable Mr Weasley magical car to the seemingly endless abuses of Muggle items and so forth- the Wizarding world seems focused upon doing one thing- cleaning up after everyone’s mess

Look carefull and you will find folks like this
There are NO police- nothing so vulgar
The Aurors seek out and hunt down Dark Wizards, and many obliterate memories and bring folks to task.
A society of long sighs, people rolling up their sleeves, many minor court cases and fines and so forth.
With occasional acts of immense cruelty and yes, death and murder.

Even at its best- the Wizarding world is a dangerous one; and everyone knows that there is no calelry coming to rescue them.  Where Wizards DO live close to each other they tend to either keep their nose out of others business or when they DO stick their nose in they do so in a way which keeps everyone ELSE out of the matter.

If you can solve an issue- you have no police to come and solve it- and unless someone PLAYS a laywer- you have to find the judges themselves to sort out such issues.

Hence why Voldermort was able to rise so well.
But also hence why Wizarding society survived and resisted the change
There do exist Dark Wizards- and they exist apparently in the same numbers they did before the War.
But crucially there is no Dark Lord to lead them.  The Aurors do their job well.
When you do find them- they are split and divided.  They war with each other- constantly nowadays the term Dark Wizard is linked to crime cartels and dangerous criminals.  They wage non stop war on each other- Wizards look over their Daily Prophets with interest but no more than we muggles read about some gangsters killing each other

Wizarding Life is therefore one of doing essentially what you want and preventing others do stuff upon you.

Why I quit

I have been asked a few questions of late.

“Why did you quit?”

OK, its not an easy one to answer- but allow me say this- I was happy being part of Hogwarts Reborn, I was PROUD of being Hogwarts Reborn; I had gone on SLCN two weeks ago to talk about Hogwarts Reborn; It was my number one activity in SL and had been for 8 months.
But I did quit.  And explaining why is contained here within this.

“Why are you sending this card now?”
Because my position HAS been misrepresented, and I need to set the record straight.

Understand I do this without malice and anger.  But I will not allow myself be misrepresented.  I do not seek my old job back nor do I expect it.  But NO ONE has explained why I left.
It seems no one understands why I left.  So I figured the members should know why I left.

“In what way has you position been misrepresented?”
Darcy recently said:
“It is with much regret that some leaders within the group made a hasty resignation before we could explain better the reorganization that is taking place.”

I refute totally, utterly and completely that statement.  It is that statement and several others which cause me to make THIS FAQ publicly known.  That statement is not an untruth- It is NOT a lie.  It is just wrong.
For example- I knew EXACTLY how the reorganisation was going to go.  I knew it BEFORE the reorganisers actually MADE their decisions.

OK- to task.
There is a two fold argument here- one that the role-play needed reorganisation and two- that I moved to fast to allow the reorganisation take place (aka  ‘Danton over reacted’ or ‘Danton was angry’- neither is true)
I intend to PROVE that neither allegation is true.
I will not just give my opinion, I will state verifiable facts.
I will give the information openly and will ask anyone to contest anything I get wrong.
I have double checked these claims I make with to make sure my details are correct.
To the best of my knowledge what follows is the truth.

The central idea of those who attacked me was that there were a series of problems within the role-play department, which justify the changes, and PROVE that the measures taken were not motivated by personal reasons.  I intend to show you all that is untrue by dealing with EACH allegation one by one.
I will list the allegation and then retort.
Allegation 1: “Many people were saying they weren’t having fun”
Retort:
Point of information: with over several hundred members, MANY is a misleading term.
I myself had about six say to me they were not ‘having fun’ in the sim in the last week.  Of the six who came to me, only ONE cited the role-play campaign as the main reason.  What they cited was interpersonal fallings out- OOC stuff each and every time.  It was the OOC arguments that prevented me from having a good time.
Please note the ‘we are not having fun’ complaint was most often heard from officers, and those linked to officers.
I am NOT saying that some people said because of the nature of the role-play, they were not having fun- I am saying MORE complained it was because of the nature of the sim management they were not having fun.

Allegation 2: “Many people were not enjoying the role-play.”
Rebuttal: The above statement is loaded- yes many were unhappy with the role-play.  Some felt it was too structured.  JUST AS MANY felt it was not structured enough.  Some felt it was too filled with OOC rules.  JUST AS MANY felt there were not enough rules.
I should know.  They would tell me in equal measure.
I often said, in fact I ALWAYS was honest with the membership and explained that the sim was made up of 20% of people who wanted it to go one way or another, and 80% who were happy with the status quo.  I always said that *I* stood against extremism of both factions.
Look at the forums for the last time I said that- less than two days before I quit..
I urge members to look for themselves.  The ONLY people who were unhappy with the role-play were the extremist 20% of the menmbership.
This is an important and salient fact later on.

Allegation 3: “There were various comments and concerns from the conflicts IC carried over to OOC.”
The role-play faculty policy remained consistent and completely committed to punishing ANY member of our organisation who would do that.
Be they a normal member or one who was a member of the role-play faculty.
In fact I ordered a serious investigation of a member of my the drama faculty less than 48 hours before I resigned because there was evidence to suggest that they had indeed engaged in deliberately using OOC upset to fuel IC actions (I believe no evidence was found on Merlot as is often the case with such things).
There are NO substantiated cases of this ever proven.  There are accusations.
Please see below for a very important clarification on accusations.

Allegation 4: “There were concerns as to the length of time it took for friends or new members were having to wait for an invite to the group.”
Each and every case has and was investigated.  Each and every case involved either a- someone failing to follow the instructions (not submitting a character sheet, not attending orientation etc) or b- a well documented glitch in SL that made group invites go buggy (each and every case was chased up where this happened)  of c- the OCCSIONAL oversight by a member of the NMM (which NMM systems allowed to be rectified).
EACH and EVERY case was investigated and rectified.
NO decision or ruling or action by the NMM and its members was ever made that was not posted openly for all officers to see.
In terms of transparency and efficiency this was the most successful of ALL systems within the SIM.

Allegation 5: “Some said their PCP were always rejected”
In an open question said upon the forums wherein people/members were freely invited to express their dislike of the PCP system or their feelings that PCP was ‘too rejection based’- ONE member said they had a PCP rejected (they also said they had one approved).
There are cases of Drama directors rejecting PCP- and where they did it was often part and parcel of the plot have deeper ramifications or fall out that would negatively impact upon the game.  But as a whole we ran a [policy which said YES- indeed, Darcy was part of that, commenting upon the forums as to validity of plot.  And more often or not I would run plot that flew in the face of the more and less canon camp.
*I will say for the record that the word NO was used in response to PCP less than 5% of all times PCP was submitted*
Read that figure.
95% of ALL PCP was allowed.
And where there was a slowness of response, I acted very quickly each and every time to speed it up.

Allegation 6:”Some have said that their ‘role-play’ was called invalid”
The term ‘invalid’ and ‘invalidate’ was only to be used in one context only.
When someone did something that had a selfish and truly negative impact upon the game.
It was used against plot run by TWO banned characters (we invalidated what they were running and later they were banned).
It was to be MOSTLY used on Drama directors by FELLOW Drama directors as a way to prevent plot that had NOT be submitted to the faculty get out there.
The terminology may have been used elsewhere in the SIM.  I content that it was used in less and a half dozen cases; and let me make this clear the term was used WITHOUT my permission to do so (except in the case of two characters who have been banned and one person who suddenly decided his house elf could turn into a giant snake and attack students).
And *I* acted when the term was used without my permission to use it.

Allegation 7:”Some were told by members of the role-play department that they were unable to role-play.”
Each and every case where SUBSTABTIATED allegations were brought to me pover this, I acted and action it.
I refuse and have for some time to sustain unsubstantiated allegations.
A recent example- at a GM Council meeting I was confronted by what appeared to be a member of my team informing Harry what he could or could not say- all members who were present at the GM council meeting will remember me having it asked aggressively as to what MY staff were doing.
When I asked for the substantiated allegation it became clear that it was NOT my staff doing so.
This is why I insist upon substantiated and non anecdotal complaints.
It prevents confusion and hasty and bad decisions.

SO in response to allegation number 7- not on my shift, not on my watch and if so, no one told me.
(please note- as to what someone did BEFORE they worked for me, I take no account for)

I quote the next allegation carefully:
8: “a big one was being told they didn’t know the difference between OOC and IC. Many members were just not role-playing because of these obstacles”.

1-    Define many
2-    This allegation is the counter of the one I mentioned earlier.  Please note I will stress this- MANY MANY MANY people use this allegation, most of whom have NOTHING to do with the drama department.
I have ALWAYS opposed the use of this statement- ALWAYS.  In fact when core officers have said to me they feel they are NOT good role-players I have always tried to convince them otherwise.
The Drama department refutes said allegation that this was indicative of our departmental ethos- after all, we and the New Members Minsitry prided ourselves on the most comprehensive introduction for members in any SIM in the whole of SL.

OK, so none of the allegations were actually true.
We had one or two members of the drama faculty who were, how shall we say ‘really eager’ (grins).
For each one who wanted to help clarify things we had about three four who never did.

But we had a split in the membership you see.  Look to what I said earlier.
About 80% of the members just wanted to play and just wanted things to work.
These are who I tried to cover at all times.
About 20% of the membership were very very passionate about one position or another- either they were ‘Hey lets go more like the books’ and others were ‘hey lets go LESS like the books’
Both camps made a LOT of noise.
BOTH camps represented a small minority.

How can you spot members of a camp?
One camp will ALWAYS say we did not do enough to police the role-play; the other campo that we are some kind of role-play Gestapo.
WE NEVER WERE.
It is just someone in a camp saying the word

The 80% will always know that you need rules and that the rules here were at least consistent and fair- and while individuals could be zealous for some rules, in each and every case someone was a counter point to that zealousness.
We were a very balanced sim.

All of this was common sense.  That was my trademark.  Total common sense.  And above all- TOTAL fairness.  Anyone who knows me, worked with me and listened to me, knows that ALL I ever wanted was total fairness for all.
No favourites, no bias, just the best service for the members.

SO why did I quit?
Harry postulates that he is motivated by a desire to ‘bring the fun back’.
You get the impression that people were unhappy with a big and bad restricting role-play department that had recently gone out of control- this is untrue.  Allow me to suggest a different model.

I rather posit a role-play department that had remained consistent and dedicated to running as much plot for as many people as possible; who had successfully run recently two large plots and about 14 small ones; who had never been afraid to confront that which we did not seem fair or that we were worried was not fair.
We NEVER made a ruling without clearly citing WHY we made a ruling; that we NEVER made a ruling without CLEARLY saying ‘please do not do this or else we will have to make a ruling’ (the use of emoticons ruling I gave SIX MONTHS warning on)
We never wanted to make a clarification on Werewolves- we were forced to because of complaints.
We never wanted to make a combat system- we were asked to by the majority of members that a resolution system was needed.
In ALL cases- responding to the NEEDS of the MAJORUITY of members.

NEVER allowing or standing for MINORITY views to impose themselves upon the desires of the substantive.

SO with all that in mind, what the HELL has just happened huh?
Let us look to the recent statements made by Darcy and Harry over the last few days.
The first statement made by Harry was this HUGE positive.
There will be no more ‘policing of the role-play’; no more bad Drama faculty and BAD new Members Ministry; the whole academy of role-play which will offer non compulsory lessons in roleplay but no one HAS to take will be the way to help new members come in
Above all there was the threat  that anyone who complains about your appearance or the fact you wanna say you were Harry Potter’s lovechild is going to be punished by Harry (I have the verbatim note card to back all this up)

And yet NOW…

Now we have a TOTAL reversal of this policy.
The first statement says no one can “invalidate the role-play”, that no one will do that stuff and NOW we are told we cannot wear furries in the castle.  First we are told there will be NO checks and balances upon membership to the list; now we are told there will be.

Or in other words-
A small minority view who believed that THEY knew better than the combined and accepted wisdom of the majority of members decided to try and impose their will upon the rest of us.
And then when there was a MASSIVE rejection of his view and they realised that their view not held by any beyond them, they backed the hell down and now have the audacity to make like THEY are the victims?!?!?!?!

And now allow me to point out the true horror of what you are about to see:
For their next trick- they will suggest a totally radical departure from what was in place and replace it with?
Something that will be identical to what existed before they did this.

There may be some name changes, there may be some small details changed here and there- but in the end- it will be the same.
I will tell you what the system they will have shall I?

It will be based upon the single principle that adults find compromise and we do not allow anyone be extremist.
That FUN is found from finding common ground
Its core value will be that people should have Fun
It will work to fulfil the needs of as many members as possible;’
It will work to prevent disruptive and unsuitable players from allowing their selfishness impose upon the majority of reasonable adults;
It will be open, honest and transparent.
How do I know this?

Because THAT was the principles of the Drama faculty and the New members Ministry.  That as what every member of said group believed in.

So what will come will be more of the same- and minor issues will be made out to be HUGE things.

I also know something else they do not know but will now tell them:
I knew NO ONE actually cared about the role-play really.
NO ONE ACTUALLY CARES about the role-play really!!!

What they care about is the *community*.
What they care about is to be part of a community where the ruels are consistant.  Where one rule for one is one rule for all.
And there are no favourites and ‘elites’
Where you are valued for what you do.
Where you are THANKED for what you do, NOT WITH WORDS, but with actions.
Where when someone plans a huge decision, the first words are ‘What about that person, this will impact upon them’ and that person is consulted beforehand.
They want a community where you CAN dissent and disagree and get into a HUGE row with someone and you know what?
You are not banned.
Your rights are not taken away from you.
Where it is OK to disagree and be passionate.
That when you find a group of people who disagree with you, you say ‘Gee, maybe I should listen more’ instead of ‘That is pissing me off, I want them to lose their power to disagree”
(I personally will NEVER  again draw up plans to disenfranchise a council whose only sin was to ‘disagree’ again)
They want a community where the ‘leaders’ can be found IN the sim, talking, actually seeking out new players.
They want a sim were ALL members are treated fairly and by the same standards.
They want THAT to be fun.
After that- the role-play works.

So WHY did I quit?
Because either one of two things has just happened

Either this WAS about personal attacks and all of the words said are a smokescreen to cover a personal vendetta of the most childish and nastiest form.
Or
It was a HUGE screw up- wherein some folks thought things worked one way and found to their hard earned lesson they did NOT.

Either way- I say now the reason why I quit-

There was NO REASON FOR THIS ARGUMNET TO HAPPEN
Until the last moment I begged, I pleaded and I implored.
And it made me so burned out that I took 48 hours from the SIM to get my strength back.

And then Harry did it anyway.
And then Harry removed my ability to send out announcements to the group so I could not even speak to the group.
At that point knowing I was about to be fired, I resigned.

I have witnesses, people who saw not just in SL but in RL all of these events.
People who sat on MY side of the screen.  Literally saw me type the words.

Please- say you disagree with me, but do not call me a liar.
I refuse to divulge the contents of many private conversations between myself Darcy and Harry and other key officers in the sim.

But if you call me a liar I will use them to prove my points.

The future?
I offer HR my love and my hopes and best wishes.
I believe now that the hopes and dreams of many people in that community were betrayed last week and that none of that need to have happened.
But I have too many friends there NOT to care about it.

Added to that- I now hope that now I no longer have to work with them, and have to agree with some of the views, that I will be able to actually get on better with Darcy and Harry.
